The world famous Postojna caves are on the way to the coast, 1hr 30 away. An indoor train takes you to the depths of the Karst. You can see the "Proteus" the human fish, which can live for 100 years underground. A short drive from here to the coast.

the coast

Slovenia has only 47kms of coastline, but its very special because it is so small. There are several Italiannate towns with views over the Adriatic. Piran, an old fishing port, or Isola are perfect for sea food and drinks by the harbours. Portoroz has designer shops and a Casino..

There are several climb sites within 10 minutes drive. They are very popular at weekends with local people.
The best known climbing wall in Slovenia - Koteenik - is only 8 Kms away, the Reška climbing wall is also close.

Day Trips

Olimje is a spa town and a trip here takes you through lovely scenery to the magnificent wine growing area. Reminiscent of France , only better. Plenty of wine tasting, cellars and shops, as well as local wine growers selling their own wares. Don't miss the stunning Monastery which has a well preserved pharmacy, the 3rd oldest in Europe. Here you can buy a cure for almost anything. A short walk up the street is the "Chocolateria", try and stay away if you can! You can then wind your way up through a deer park to the restaurant where they feed the deer as well as you. Oh and don't forget the Witches Garden and house up the road! Fun for children and adults alike.

Ptuj is the oldest continuously settled site in Slovenia and historically the most important. The Town is a Medieval wonder mixed with the Romanesque, the castle being the towns show piece attraction.

Ljubljana is a must. Slovenia's Capital has pretty much everything. Museums, galleries, markets interspersed with magnificent buildings, bridges, and pathways. This is topped by a stunning castle which you can get to by either a little train or the newly opened funicular.

Logarska Valley this is a 7km long alpine valley where you can walk to the 90metre high Rinka Waterfall. This is the source of the Savinja River which flows back through the valley to the lower slopes where the Chalet is. The green valley floor is surrounded with cliffs, waterfalls, springs, and majestic wreaths of grey jagged peaks. There's horse riding and bikes for hire and plenty of walking and rock climbing.

Local Trips

Celje is the nearest city, the 3rd largest in Slovenia. The Old Town is enchanting but equally so is the new shopping mall, which boasts a C&A and H&M amongst others, as well as lots of cafes and the multiplex cinema.
Kamnik if you can fit this town in on your way back to Ljubljana Airport- then do so. Its a gem. It has a wonderful Romanesque chapel and crypt which has been brilliantly restored. It gives views out over one of Slovenia's prettiest medieval towns with the Kamniske Alps in the background.

Velenje is just 20 mins away. Turn right from the Chalet and experience the beautiful scenery of the lower Savinja valley on your way. Velenje is a mix of the old and new. The new was opened in 1959 as a model industrial workers town and has been visited by both Tito and Brezhnev. the old has a splendid 16th century castle and museum. The town was founded on its coal mine and you should visit this - really! Its a revelation. On top of the mine are 3 picturesque lakes formed in the depressions caused by the mining. You can take a pleasant walk around them and end at the Jezero restaurant, also well worth visiting.

We also recommend:

• The museum of Our village and Folk law at the Castle at Prebold (well worth a visit )
• Museum of the Coal Industry at Velenje
• The new state of the art Museum of hop growing at ┼Żalec
• Museum of Motorcycles at Vransko
• The Fire Engine Museum at Vransko
• The Castle and Numerous Museums at Celje
